Click here for the event "report out."

Session 1:  9:00 a.m. to 9:50 a.m.

Focus: Christ

Topic:  Serving Charity and Justice:  Serving in Hope, Module VI, Section 6.3, “Our Service”

(Presenters:  Designated readers and discussion leaders)

Description:  Why and how is service central to our Vincentian spirituality and Catholic faith? This session focuses on “Our Service” and through your participation you will: 1) understand the essential element of “service” in the conference; 2) appreciate the oft heard phrase that “No work of charity is foreign to the Society”; 3) identify what it means and how you can be a “Voice of the Poor”; and 4) understand the concept of systemic change and the need for it in what we do in service as Vincentians.

Session 2:  10 a.m. to 10:50 a.m.

Focus:  Conference

Topic:  Moments of Truth:  Asking the Hard “Why” Questions During Home Visits

(Presenters:  Panel of Home Visit team leaders )

Description: When we encounter those in need, we offer counsel with humility, in trust and in friendship, with empathy and in confidence, but also with honesty and candor.  In this session, we will review the Rule for its guidance about “Our Personal Encounters with the Poor” (Rule, 1.7-1.12) and our panel will discuss effective, practical ways to counsel our brothers and sisters in need.  Group discussion will follow.

Session 3:  11 a.m. to 11:50 a.m.

Focus:  Community

Topic:  How to Organize a Walk for the Poor (or “How I Raised Over $1,000 for My Conference!”)

(Presenters:  Panel of experienced Walk organizers)

Description:  The 2015 Friends of the Poor Walk, an annual event sponsored by the National Council of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, takes place in late September in cities across the United States.  This national walk is a highly visible event that allows us to witness for the poor and those often forgotten in our communities.  The event builds conference fellowship and, of growing importance, provides a proven, successful fundraising opportunity.   In this session, learn how your conference or your district council might benefit from “taking a walk in the park” from those who have organized past walks with success.

*All sessions are free and open to all Vincentians, associates and guests.  You may attend one or all of the sessions.  Space is limited.  Please RSVP to paulstarkey@wavecable.com  (916) 955-6758.  A continental style breakfast will be available.  Donations to support this training effort will be accepted at the event.
